A Programme of the Chinese Culture Festival 2026

The “Hong Kong Art: Co-Creation” exhibition series was introduced by the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) in 2018 to present the vibrant spectrum of contemporary Hong Kong art and culture by inviting curatorial proposals. Themed around Chinese characters, the exhibition “By the People: Creative Chinese Characters” was a key project in this series. Presented at the HKMoA from 2022 to 2023, the exhibition received an overwhelming response, attracting over 440,000 visitors. The HKMoA is pleased to collaborate with renowned designer Mr Freeman Lau once again, this time joining forces with the Guangdong Museum of Art to bring this acclaimed exhibition to Guangzhou.

Chinese characters have a rich artistic and cultural history. Their unique structures and forms have long inspired literati and calligraphers in their creative pursuits. Across regions, craftsmen, artists and designers have each brought their unique ingenuity to the application of Chinese characters, integrating them into daily life and contemporary creations. Building on the compelling content of the first edition, the exhibition features nearly 90 sets of exhibits in various media from the HKMoA collection, private collectors and institutions, including new exhibits to further explore the diverse possibilities of calligraphy art in the contemporary era. By comprehensively presenting the creative applications and deep cultural connotations of Chinese characters, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the interplay between Chinese characters, calligraphy, creativity and art from multiple perspectives, celebrating the contemporary vitality of Chinese culture.
