The works of Sil-Metropole (including its predecessors Great Wall, Feng Huang and Sun Luen) effectively capture the ways with which Chinese traditional culture is manifested in modern society. With most of their key personnel hailing from Shanghai in the 1950s, they contributed greatly to the continuous advancement of the Hong Kong film industry. This programme will showcase 16 films of their golden era, complemented by post-screening talks, providing a precious opportunity to learn about the dedication to Chinese culture by different generations of filmmakers.

The programme opens with a 4K digitally restored version of Father and Son (1981). Carrying the torch of Hong Kong cinema’s social realism, New Wave director Allen Fong depicts the complex emotions of love and hate between a father and his son in a family of meagre means. The closing film of the programme is a revised version of Butterfly Beauty (1959), featuring a host of accomplished Cantonese Opera artists in four separate segments that represent the best of the national intangible cultural heritage that is Cantonese Opera.
